Nature and Composition

• Main component: high-density plastic polymers (HDPE or PP).

• Shape: small floating cylindrical or star-shaped elements, a few millimeters to centimeters in size.

• Bulk density: around 1 g/cm³ for good circulation in water.

• Specific surface area: 500–1200 m²/m³ depending on the model.

• Color: white, black, gray, or blue depending on the manufacturer.

Biological Filtration Properties

• MBBR media serve as a support for bacterial biofilm growth, which degrades organic matter and nitrogen compounds (ammonia, nitrites).

• In constant motion through aeration, they provide efficient, self-cleaning biological treatment.

• Efficiency depends on:

  • media surface area,

  • reactor filling rate (30–60% of tank volume),

  • and aeration intensity.
