Zeolite in aquaculture – Natural filtration and ammonium removal

Zeolite is a natural or synthetic aluminosilicate mineral formed by the weathering of volcanic rocks in an alkaline environment. Its microporous crystalline structure gives it a very high cation exchange capacity and a large specific surface area. These properties make it an excellent filtering material for aquaculture.

Role and operating principles

In aquaculture, zeolite is used in biological and mechanical filtration systems, particularly to:

Adsorb ammonium (NH₄⁺) dissolved in water, thereby reducing the toxicity of ammonia for fish.
Trap certain heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb).
Clarify the water by retaining fine suspended solids.
Stabilize pH and improve overall water quality.
Serve as a bacterial support for nitrifying microorganisms (Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter), promoting the conversion of ammonium into nitrate.

Practical applications

Biological filters: bulk zeolite in filtration chambers or trickling filters.
Mechanical filters: filter layers to clarify the water before recirculation.
Direct application in ponds: zeolite dispersed in water or placed in mesh bags to absorb ammonium (temporary use).
