Applications in Aquaculture and Aquarium Filtration

  • Mechanical filtration: retains fine suspended solids (sediments, organic debris).

  • Biological filtration: provides surface area for bacterial colonization (nitrification).

  • Suitable for pressure sand filters, slow sand filters, or multilayer filters (with anthracite, gravel, etc.).

Advantages

  • Excellent specific surface area promoting bacterial growth.

  • Good hydraulic permeability, balancing filtration rate and fine particle retention.

  • Chemically inert: does not affect pH or water hardness.

  • Suitable for both freshwater and seawater.

Recommendations for Use

  • Filter bed depth: 20 cm at the bottom of the filter

  • Backwashing frequency: according to suspended solids load and pressure drop.
