Mutag BioChip

The term biomedia generally refers to the carriers (materials) used in biological water treatment systems (wastewater treatment plants, recirculating aquaculture systems, etc.). These carriers provide a large surface area for bacteria that degrade organic matter, oxidize ammonia (NH₃) into nitrites/nitrates, and more.

MUTAG is a German company specialized in advanced biomedia, particularly for biological reactors (MBBR – Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor). Their flagship product is the Mutag BioChip™, a high-performance plastic carrier.

Mutag BioChip™ Biomedia – Description

  • Shape: small flat and porous plastic disc.

  • Size: about 25 mm in diameter, 1.1 mm thick.

  • Specific surface area: up to 3500 m²/m³ of media (very high compared to conventional carriers).

  • Mechanism:

    • Bacteria attach to and grow on/inside the porous structure.

    • The outer layer supports rapid nitrification (aerobic bacteria).

    • The deeper inner layers allow anoxic processes (possible denitrification).

  • Advantages:

    • Excellent nitrogen removal capacity (NH₄⁺, NO₂⁻, NO₃⁻).

    • Low risk of clogging thanks to continuous mixing.

    • Very long lifetime (over 20 years).

    • Compact design allowing small but highly efficient installations.

Applications:

  • Municipal and industrial wastewater treatment.

  • Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS).

  • Agro-food effluent treatment.
