The term biomedia generally refers to the carriers (materials) used in biological water treatment systems (wastewater treatment plants, recirculating aquaculture systems, etc.). These carriers provide a large surface area for bacteria that degrade organic matter, oxidize ammonia (NH₃) into nitrites/nitrates, and more.
MUTAG is a German company specialized in advanced biomedia, particularly for biological reactors (MBBR – Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor). Their flagship product is the Mutag BioChip™, a high-performance plastic carrier.
Mutag BioChip™ Biomedia – Description
Shape: small flat and porous plastic disc.
Size: about 25 mm in diameter, 1.1 mm thick.
Specific surface area: up to 3500 m²/m³ of media (very high compared to conventional carriers).
Mechanism:
Bacteria attach to and grow on/inside the porous structure.
The outer layer supports rapid nitrification (aerobic bacteria).
The deeper inner layers allow anoxic processes (possible denitrification).
Advantages:
Excellent nitrogen removal capacity (NH₄⁺, NO₂⁻, NO₃⁻).
Low risk of clogging thanks to continuous mixing.
Very long lifetime (over 20 years).
Compact design allowing small but highly efficient installations.
Applications:
Municipal and industrial wastewater treatment.
Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS).
Agro-food effluent treatment.
