Hatching substrates

In aquaculture, the hatching substrate (or incubation support) refers to any material or structure that serves as a support for the attachment, protection, and development of eggs until hatching. Its nature and design strongly depend on the species being cultured and the mode of reproduction (natural or artificial).

The hatching substrate (or incubation support) is any material or structure used as a support for the attachment, protection, and development of fish eggs until hatching. Its nature and design depend on the species and the type of reproduction (natural or artificial).

Key Characteristics

A good hatching substrate should:

  • Have a large specific surface area for egg attachment,

  • Be chemically inert (not releasing toxic substances or altering pH),

  • Be easy to clean and disinfect,

  • Allow good water circulation among the eggs,

  • Be durable and resistant,

  • Have a texture and color suitable for the species’ spawning behavior.

The use of hatching substrates has a positive effect on the growth and survival rate of juvenile fish. The eggs are dispersed on the upper mat, and the hatched larvae actively swim in the sheltered space between the two mats, where they grow until the free-swimming stage. Up to 30% higher body weight compared to rearing without a substrate.

Two models: ST-I and ST-II.

Models Reference Data Lenght - Width -Height(mm) Weight  (kg)
1 C0046100 Hatching substrates ST-I (2 pcs.) 400-400 1.5
2 C0046200 Hatching substrates ST-II, roll width 910 mm, per linear meter m 2.0/m

Substrate Management

  • Before use: disinfect (commonly with diluted bleach or potassium permanganate) and rinse thoroughly.

  • During incubation: monitor temperature, oxygen level, and water flow.

  • After hatching: remove and clean to prevent microbial contamination.
