A vertical incubator in aquaculture is a system used for the incubation and hatching of fish eggs or other aquatic organisms (such as shrimp or mollusks). It is designed vertically to optimize space, improve water circulation, and increase hatching efficiency.
Vertical structure: Typically made of tubes, cylinders, or stacked/suspended columns, maximizing space use in hatcheries.
Water circulation: Water flows gently upward or downward, keeping eggs in suspension without damaging them.
Parameter control: Temperature, oxygenation, salinity (for marine species), and flow rate are precisely regulated.
Materials: Made of food-grade plastic (e.g., PVC), glass, or stainless steel to prevent contamination.
Modular capacity: Can be adapted to different species and egg quantities.
Space saving: The vertical design is ideal for compact or indoor facilities.
High efficiency: Uniform conditions ensure optimal hatching rates.
Lower mortality: Reduced mechanical stress on eggs compared to horizontal systems.
Easy monitoring: Transparent compartments allow visual inspection and management.
Incubation of salmon, trout, tilapia, or other high-value species.

Imagine a transparent column divided into sections, each filled with gently circulating water. Eggs are suspended in each section, floating softly in a vertical current. A pump ensures constant water flow. After hatching, the larvae are transferred to nursery tanks.
Vertical incubators allow for the incubation of large quantities of eggs relative to the footprint and water consumption. Water enters the top tray, passes through the eggs in an upward current, and then falls into the tray below. It is recommended to drain the water after 8 trays and provide a fresh water supply for the next group. The division into different trays allows for the management of different batches. The hatched fry remain in the basket until the first feeding phase, when they must be transferred to the appropriate tanks.
