Pressurized Biofilter MHF

Pressurized biofilters, whether fixed or fluidized bed, are used to treat water in aquaculture systems, particularly in recirculating systems (RAS), where it is essential to maintain optimal water quality for fish health.

Pressurized Fixed-Bed Biofilter:

  • Operating Principle: The water to be treated passes through a fixed bed of filtering materials (such as plastic beads, stones, or synthetic substrates). Nitrifying bacteria develop on the surface of these materials and break down dissolved organic substances, such as ammonia and nitrites, transforming them into less harmful compounds.

  • Advantages: This system is relatively simple to install and maintain, and it allows for efficient degradation of organic pollutants in the water.

  • Limitations: A fixed bed can lead to clogging issues over time, which reduces the filter's efficiency. Regular maintenance is required to prevent excessive buildup of organic debris.

Pressurized Fluidized-Bed Biofilter:

  • Operating Principle: In a fluidized-bed biofilter, the filtering substrate is kept in suspension in the water by controlled circulation. Water flows through the agitated substrate, creating a "fluidized bed." This movement improves the diffusion of nutrients and gases between the water and the microorganisms present on the substrate.

  • Advantages: The main advantage of this type of filter is its higher efficiency, as the continuous movement of the substrate promotes a greater surface area for contact between the bacteria and the water. This allows for a higher treatment rate and greater pollutant degradation capacity.

  • Limitations: Installation and maintenance costs can be higher, and the system may be more complex to operate. Special attention must be paid to flow adjustment to avoid failures.

MHF filters are tested at 4 Bars and are designed to operate at a maximum pressure of 2.5 Bars.
