Pond Monk (Drain Tower)

A pond monk (also called a "drain tower") is a hydraulic structure used to control the water level and drain water from a pond in a regulated manner. It is essential for the management of fish ponds, agricultural ponds, or ornamental bodies of water.

Description:

• Structure: The monk is usually a vertical masonry or concrete structure, located near the pond embankment.

• Operation: It is connected to a drain pipe (also called an "outlet culvert") that passes through the embankment. Water enters the monk through slots or removable wooden boards ("stop logs") that can be added or removed to adjust the water level.

• Drainage: By gradually removing the boards, the pond water level is lowered to partially or completely empty the pond, for example during harvesting or maintenance.
